MSG: Mega Super Good

Check out Derrick Avenue, Cyrildene (Joburg) for some fine Chinese cuisine free of discrimination. Hot & Sour soup is a lie though, its neither. Happy New Year.

  2. The exchange rate is currently 7.7 rand to the dollar. Last year when the markets were tossing and turning it reached just above 12 rand to the dollar for a very short time. Fx aside, food inflation is a real thing in this country - I'm feeling this pain only one and a half years into my stay here. Colleagues of mine say that in 4 years time the cost of an average take-a-way from Sandton City (eww) has tripled.

  6. Hi Zoe,

There is a big Chinese population in South Africa indeed. After the fall of apartheid until today it is estimated that 200,000 - 300,000 Chinese have immigrated to South Africa (Wikipedia). This phenomenon is not unique to South African though, new trade agreements, infrastructure projects and China's thirst for natural resources have driven many Chinese multinationals to seek invest opportunities throughout the continent. The terms of these deals are often very favourable to China and in many cases allow for Chinese workers to be brought in for labour, leaving local Africans out of luck.

Here are a couple of very compelling photo essays from the New York Times that speak to China's ever growing influence on Mama Africa.

  8. Yo Paul

Photos were taken with Canon 40D + 17-40mm f4 L, in RAW format. I shot in mono but when uploading, my imaging programme strips away all processing the camera does and gives you a colour RAW which needs to be processed - better to have control over this bit than to let canon apply its own averages which in many instances aren't true to what I see. Word.
